Strong passwords should contain the following elements:
- Are not easily guessed
- Do not contain personal information
- Change regularly
- Can be remembered
This means it's best if they contain a variety of letters, numbers and
other characters, including capital letters.
Information personal to you like your social security number, spouse's
name, pet's name, child's name an other similar info are easily obtained.
Changing a password frequently helps prevent password theft, but increases
the chance of forgetting your password. Be sure to change passwords
whenever you change jobs, offices, work areas, or when what you have
access to changes. These are prime times for password theft.
It is important that you are able to remember your password. If you have
to write your password down, it is not a good password.
For the reasons above, I have written a password generator to help people come up with good passwords. Probably the most useful is the pronouncable password generator which joins consonants and vowels in a way that they can be pronounced. A number is randomly added to increase the passwords strength against brute force attacks. If you can remember it, you may also want to capitalize one or more of the letters.
